What Is Society Coming To? Librarian Assistant Fired After Child Porn Incident

There has been much talk and speculation regarding the case surrounding Brenda Beisterfield, a librarian's assistant in Lindsay, California, who was fired after reporting a citizen who was using the libraries computers to view child pornography.

According to Beisterfield, once she witnessed the man viewing the degrading and inappropriate images, she called her supervisor to seek counsel as to how to handle the situation. She was told that she should simply give the man a note asking him to cease any further viewing of that type of material or else he would have to leave and she was instructed to not contact the police department. As many of you probably can relate, she was not comfortable with the advice she received so she contacted the police and was told by them to call ASAP if she witnessed that man or anyone else viewing child pornography in the library.

Days later the man returned and resumed his viewing of child pornography. Ms. Biesterfeld did not hesitate to contact police this time. They showed up and caught the accused, Mr. Donny Lynn Chrisler, 39, in the act of viewing the child pornography. They arrested him on suspicion of possessing child pornography and participating in the production or presentation of obscene matter in public places. The last count refers to a statute in California's penal code making it illegal to show pornography or other offensive material in view of the general public. The computer was also confiscated as evidence.

I find it important to note that Mr. Chrisler's home was searched and Police later reported finding more images of child pornography.

What happened next is unbelievable. Ms. Brenda Biesterfeld was fired from the library. Of course, her supervisors (the same one who said not to call police) claim that she was fired because she was on probation because she was a new employee and did not perform well enough maintain the position. However, Lindsay City Councilwoman Suzi Picaso said that six weeks before Biesterfeld's firing, an assistant of Lewis told her Biesterfeld was doing a great job so what happened here?

I think that it is easy to speculate that she was fired due to this incident. Her supervisors refuse to comment as to why she was fired but other public officials stand by Biesterfield and say that her dismissal was unwarranted and she should be applauded and praised for what she did. I agree.

The argument some have used regarding this is that Ms. Biesterfield violated the privacy rights of Mr. Chrisler when she reported him. I have to wonder since when is it a violation of a person's rights to report them for committing a crime? If this continues society will be in some serious trouble. What if he has actually raped someone there? Would reporting that have been a violation of his rights? Who or what are they trying to protect here?

Won't You Join Us?

What God is nudging us to “proclaim” is that we, the parents, are our children’s primary teachers. It is our biblical duty to “train them up in the way they should go” and that isn’t just for those of us who keep our kids home and teach them the educational basics.

It is the responsibility of all parents whether our children are in public, private, charter, co-op, or home schools. We are still their primary teacher; but many parents in this day and age have become lazy with that responsibility. That is why it must change now.

Parents should be excited about teaching kids to cook, plant a garden, read a story, and most importantly learn about our Lord and Savior. THAT is homeschooling. Every parent becomes a homeschooler the day their child is born. You teach them to coo and ga, how to sit up, how to walk, what to eat, how to dress, and so on.

Our mandate is given in Exodus 18:20. God wants us to teach our children His principles, His thoughts on family, His plan for our future. Those are His mandates that must be taught at home.

Will you join us in parenting by example?

Home Education Week

Dana is hosting Home Education Week over at her blog Principled Discovery. Here is a list of the scheduled topics:

Looking Back Sunday, March 30
Share your personal history…before you were a home educator. What was life like? Think about things you miss and things you and your family have gained. Activity: A card for you, and make your own!

Profiling Home Educators Monday, March 31
Describe yourself, your family or one of your children. What is it like to be home educated in your family? What is “normal” for you?

April Fool’s! Tuesday, April 1
And we have likely all felt the fool in one way or another. Share your greatest challenge. Or one of those terrible, horrible no good, very bad days where the only thing there is to do seems to involve moving to Australia.

Recipe for Success Wednesday, April 2
It is also National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day! So share a recipe…figuratively, as in two parts love, one part creativity, or literally, as in a super quick, nutritious meal your kids scarf up. Think about what you do in the day, what helps keep it organized and you sane (or how you got past that need for organization and saneness!), and curriculum materials you find effective.

Show and Tell Thursday, April 3
Show off those talents. Share a story, a special moment, a piece of artwork. Any accomplishment, great or small, is fair game.

In Their Own Words Friday, April 4
Share your children’s home education experience in their own words. What have they said about their education? What are their likes and dislikes? Share some stories, some quotes, or turn your blog over to your children for the day.

Looking Forward Saturday, April 5
What are your goals for home education? What do you hope to instill in your children? Are you planning any changes to how you educate your children?

Get "Lost"? Are You Kidding Me?

I'm a reality tv kind of girl. Top Chef, American Idol, Supernanny, The Biggest Loser, Here Come the Newlyweds, and the like. In fact, the only unreality TV show I watch is CSI (which is my FAVORITE). So for a couple of years now I have been listening to all the hype and all of the "you have to watch it next week" about this one particular show and I never caved in. Well, that is until now.

You see I had no intentions of ever getting sucked into the fairy tale land of "Lost" but my friends all raved about it. Then my husband came home and admitted that he was a closet "lost" boy. "Don't knock it honey 'cause you would like it", he says.

Me? Like Lost?

Then... THEN... The Preacher's Wife starts raving about the latest episode of Lost. Wow. I'm shocked. Is it really that good?

*sigh*

I guess I'll find out soon. I got season one in from Netflix today. I'm doing it Lisa! I'm gonna "get Lost"!

Stuck In A Rut

Ryan and I have been trying hard to pay off debt and get ahead financially. We would like to have a child of our own but at the present time we don't have the means or the room. Ryan is working 3 jobs and I am working from home to try to get ahead yet it doesn't seem to be working. For instance...

mmmmm... YUM!

I just had a Baja Chicken Sub from Quiznos. It is so delish! Oh my! I am so gonna make a copy cat recipe of this!!

I also read the back of the cup (for the first time). It says they started this business because some fine culinary chef's in an Italian restaurant in Denvor's Capitol Hill were playing around making subs with all of the fine cuisine they had available. That explains why I love them so much!

What is your favorite sub?

Too Much of the Wrong Kind of Socialization

It's funny but as a homeschooling mom I ofter hear the question,

"Aren't you concerned that your kids won't grow to be sociable?"

Gee Whiz. I guess they will miss out on developing many social skills since they aren't enrolled in public school. After all, a couple years ago when they were enrolled in public school they often came home to tell me all about the socializing that occurred during the day.Like the time my second grader came home and asked me why....

Wireless Card Woes

My internet service has been wacko for about a month now. I figured that it must be the unpleasant weather we had been having but it wasn't. My internet completely went out on me this week. BAM!! No more internet. My wireless card went out.

Can you say blessing in disguise?

My house looks like a million bucks. I cleaned out ever room in the house except the boys room (who would dare venture into that type of territory?). I spent lots of time with my hubby and kids and I even got started on next years curriculum planning! I relaxed and read my books and spent some quality time with God in the backyard. I also got into some other fun adventures which I will post about this week.

Our Easter service Sunday morning was awesome. Pastor Mike Haman delivered a message about our worth and how Christ proved it by paying the ultimate price for us. Everyone has a desire to matter to someone... well we all matter a whole lot to Jesus. We had a wonderful Easter.

Oh and we finally got it the internet fixed this weekend so I will be back to blogging as usual. Did you miss me? ;o)
