Quirky Things About Me....

Trish tagged me with a 6 Quirky Things meme.

The rules are:
* Link to the person who tagged you.
* Mention the rules in your blog.
* Tell about six unspectacular quirks of yours.
* Tag a new set of six following bloggers by linking to them:

  1. I put ice in my coffee. It can't consume anything that is too hot.
  2. I hate fast food (except Wendys). I would rather eat chalk than to pull up to McDonald's drive through.
  3. I am a hair dye fanatic (organic with natural colorants, of course). My husband never knows who he is going to wake up to.
  4. I pre-plan everything... even my planning time. Then I procrastinate. So I plan around my procrastination. It's a gift.
  5. I hate waking up early but find that the only time I get everything done is when I wake up around 7ish. Otherwise, my body will not get up till after 9. It knows better.
  6. I am obsessed with bibles, journals, and books. I have every version of the bible, and hundreds of books by Christian authors.

It is actually my turn to "tag" some people but instead I'll let you decide if you want to play. If you do then leave me a comment and I'll put a link to you in this post.

What makes you "quirky"?

Going On Vacation....

I'll be going on a semi-vacation over the next few days... we are going to Iowa to visit with Ryan's family. I'll be sure to post many pictures when I return. Leave me some love!

How do you like the new look?

Organic Spirituality

I have been on a real quest to get healthy. In my quest, I took up reading several books about eating and the lifestyle of health God intended for us to have. All of these books sent me on a search for "organic" foods so I wanted to know exactly what that meant....

Taking Up Permanent Residence

"If you'll live like no one else, then later you can live like no one else."
Dave Ramsey

We started on Dave's Total Money Makeover quite a while back but I am just now finishing up the book. There have been so many truths that have come to life through the course of my reading it and surprisingly, not all of them were financial.

Dave constantly says, "If you'll live like no one else, then later you can live like no one else."

What a picture of God's kingdom! What we do today will effect us for all of eternity. We can choose to satisfy our flesh today and forgo the eternal riches or we can crucify that flesh are receive our awards in heaven. I usually always try to choose heaven. We have to get a grip on how temporary the place really is. John Ortberg said that living for this life is like moving into a Motel 6 (or worse) for a week and going all out to make it homely. You know, calling in the designers and decorators; buying high end furniture; tiling the floors and bathroom; bringing in the matching dishes and napkins; having the post office forward all you mail to you, and all for a temporary stay. You just wouldn't do it.

Gosh, that is so much to comprehend and think about. I spend so much time trying to finance this life, shape up this body, and capitalize on my time here when it is all so temporary. God has to be above all and then He will guide us our next priority for that time.

What ways do you make this home permanent when you should be making it temporary?

Chocolate "Blew Up" Cake

You know I am on a healthy, whole food kick, right? Well, on Saturday my sister and I went shopping at the Whole Foods store. I had a simple list:

  • bread
  • chocolate milk
  • heavy cream for ice cream (yum)
  • honey
  • chicken
  • pineapple
  • juice
  • romaine lettuce

So we perused through the store admiring the organic, non-harmful nail polish and body lotion all the while gathering my groceries. I even brought my reusable grocery totes to enhance the experience. There were goodies everywhere and the word "organic" seemed to make the calories disappear. We were almost done browsing and shopping when we got to the bakery department and I turned around and noticed my sister was missing. Knowing someone wouldn't mistake her for a desert (she's mean, not sweet :) I looked all over to find her.

I went back to the cracker aisle, down the freezer section, looked again in the dairy area (say that fast three times) and finally got back to the baked goods. Then a really big guy (about 5"6') moved on with his cart, cleared the view, and there she was, all 4 foot 11 inches of her. She was staring intently into the case that held the cakes and pies.

"What is she doing?" I thought. I am on a diet lifestyle change and she is looking at calories, and lots of them! I have avoided temptation for the last hour and she is caving in? So, I took a deep breath and started making my way towards her. She was going to get a piece of my mind if she was thinking about buying a piece of that cake. I wasn't going to stand for this. I thought of lots of clever and witty things to say while en route to the desert case. Anger began to swell up inside of me and I was gonna let her know it.

I got to the case, stopped my buggy (cart for you northerners), looked her in the eye, opened my mouth, and said it....

"How much is it?"

It was Chocolate Eruption Cake, folks! And it was at Whole Foods so it must have some nutritional value, shouldn't it?

The Chocolate Eruption Cake quickly turned into Chocolate "Blew Up" Cake as everyone started to dig in. The little princess had chocolate all over her face, in her nose and ears, and don't ask what the chair she sat in now looked like. All of the boys had some and even Mr. NON-Organic (Darin, Andrea's hubby) had a piece. It was delicious. Not at all rich, just yummy. There was dark chocolate shavings and drizzle, chocolate mousse filling, a creamy, yummy, icing and the cake was good too! Needless to say it didn't last very long....

The Chocolate "Blew Up" Cake erupted in the sink and even caused my waistline to expand. Thanks, Whole Foods! much appreciated.

Cafe Chat - Pass On the Positives

What is a positive tradition or godly character trait that you learned from your extended family that you hope to pass down to your own family?

I hope to pass on the love and giving nature. I also like that my husband's parents had some great traditions while they were growing up. Like, reading the story of Jesus' birth before opening gifts on Christmas day and taking vacations. That is something we never did much of before and I love that we do it now. We are making lots of memories!

From my grandmother, I recently learned not to hoarde things out of fear of not having money to purchase them later. For example, I kept all of my sister's baby clothes for the last couple of years because I hope one day to have another child but I know it won't be any time in the near future so the clothes just sit in boxes.

My grandma said, "Honey, someone could be using those clothes today!"
And I said, "But what if I need them later and don't have the money to buy them?"
"Don't plan to be broke." she replied to me. "Trust God."

Don't plan to be broke. That stuck with me. I donated alot of stuff to needy families and I am still going through things. I am not going to occupy any more space in my house because I "plan" on being broke in the future.

Thanks grandma!

Celebrating Our Nation's Heroes

We went to our local Veteran’s Reunion Celebration and took the kids along for some fun and adventure. We got to see a helicopter fly in, sit in humvees, view the traveling wall, and lots of other great stuff. Of course, my sister and I took pictures and we will share them. Just ignore the sugar induced activities by the princess. They gave her cake and Kool-Aid as soon as we walked in. Some people just don’t get it (sugar + little children = disaster). Here are some photos:
